Cesarean surgery is the most prevalent large incision surgery in the world, and its prevalence is growing, both domestically and globally. This growth has been due to a number of factors, including the increasing age of first time mothers, the recognized dangers of vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC), the litigiousness of the obstetrics industry, and changing cultural attitudes surrounding childbirth. Cesarean deliveries represent the majority of births in China and much of Asia, as well as one third of all US births.
Sutures are the standard-of-care in large incision surgical closure, such as cesarean section. They cause tissue damage, act as a pathway for the spread of infection, demand technical skill, promote adhesions, and consume a huge fraction of the time spent in cesarean delivery. Surgical staples and glues have taken market share from sutures in the cutaneous closure market, promising speed, and, in some cases, less tissue damage.
Like sutures, Zip-Stitch® achieves hemostasis and wound closure, but unlike
sutures, Zip-Stitch® provides a physical barrier to adhesions and is not a conduit for infection. ZSX Medical is confident that these attributes and better patient outcomes will do much to break sutures’ monopoly in internal closure.
